BUSINESS TRAINING

Is your purpose to become a life coach? Have you been thinking about pursuing it as a career? This episode is going to help you answer the question, “Should I become a life coach?”

There are hundreds of ways to make a very healthy living as a life coach. And I can definitely teach you the business skills and steps to be successful. But if you’re not fueled by passion, it will just be a “job”. In which case you should look to pursue something else. I know that may sound harsh, but this work requires a lot of heart. If you don’t have it, you won’t be happy. The heart and passion has to be there.

Life coaches are born,  they’re not made. You don’t really choose to be a life coach. It’s a profession that chooses you. It’s either in your DNA or it’s not. Some will say that it is a teachable skill. I disagree. Keep reading/ watching/ listening and you’ll understand what I mean.

I’m going to ask you 3 questions that will help you discover whether life coaching is in your DNA. If it is, it’s up to you to decide whether you want to pursue it as a career path.

You don’t really choose to be a life coach. It’s a profession that chooses you.

Question 1: Do you have secret life coaching skills that you were either born with, gained from life experience or mastered because you’ve been doing it for so long without even realizing it?

Natural born coaches have innate life coaching skills. You know you have this gift if you’re really good at listening without interrupting; If you are good at asking questions and creating space for people to think out loud and find solutions to their problems; If you are gifted at seeing situations from various perspectives and helping others open their minds to new ideas.

You might be born to do this work if you are generally positive, emotionally strong and encouraging, and you tend to bring out these qualities in others; If you have an aura about you that makes people feel safe in you presence.

You probably even get total strangers walking up to you and telling you their whole life story the first time you meet them. That’s because the energy you create makes people feel safe around you. People naturally like and trust you. You aren’t judgmental and you are generally encouraging, making people feel lifted when they’re in your energy.

These are all skills and qualities that not everybody has. They are gifts that can be channeled into doing really great work in the world as a life coach.

Do you have life experiences that have put you in a position to help others?

Have you been through a transformational experience that was difficult to navigate—losing weight, beating a disease, getting a divorce, surviving a spouse, overcoming the odds and maintaining a happy marriage, raising children, moving to a new and strange place, getting out of debt, surviving abuse, transforming your inner world, finding God or spirit, healing from emotional trauma, etc.

There’s so many different ways that you have grown as a human and as a person and so many experiences you’ve been through. And if you feel really called to help people through a similar experience because you’ve been through the trenches, and now you can help navigate them through those same trenches—then you might have exactly what it takes to be a life coach.

Have you acquired expertise over years and years of doing something on repeat. That makes you a natural expert in a certain area?

I have a client who used to be a teacher and she worked with children. She loved working with children, loved talking to them and coaching them through stuff that was totally unrelated to school. And because she was so passionate about it and because she had spent so many years doing this, she had a certain level of mastery in it. She’s become an expert at talking to kids. And so, she turned that expertise into a business where she could coach children every day on a regular basis.

You might already be an expert, without even realizing it.

If you have done something over and over and over, and you’ve gained mastery, you’re an expert. If you’ve been through something personally and you’ve conquered it, you’re an expert. If you were born with a natural coaching ability, and people have come to you your entire life, you’re an expert.

These are all different ways of recognizing that you have mastery and expertise that you can absolutely channel into a career that lets you get paid to use your gifts.

Now, as you reflect on that question, are you saying to yourself,

“Hell yeah! I’ve been coaching my entire life!”? Well then, you were probably born to do this work.

Question 2: What is your favorite thing about each job you’ve ever had?

Think back to every past job that you’ve ever had. What was it that you looked forward to most at each one of those jobs? I’m going to give you my personal example of answering this question.

I’ve had a lot of different jobs. And what I loved most about each of them was building relationships and “coaching” people.

I was a waitress at a family restaurant and I loved sitting down and talking to the regulars, getting to know them and listening to them talk about their life.

I hosted Pure Romance parties for awhile. Even though I was only in my early 20s and only recently married, I found myself talking to these women about their relationships and their marriages—about how to communicate with their husbands, about how to spice it up in the bedroom and make little changes to their daily life to feel sexier, appreciated, and more confident. I became an accidental relationship coach in that process and absolutely loved it. It was so rewarding. That that is what got me excited to get up and go to somebody’s house and do one of those parties because I loved the coaching aspect.

I worked for a short time at a strip club where I worked the front door taking cover charge and checking coats. I turned into a coach there, too! There was regulars that would come in all the time because they were having problems at home with their wives and they thought, “Well, I’m having problems, so strip club must be the solution, right?” They would often open up to me and tell me about their problems at home. And I would coach them by giving them ideas to take their wives out on dates and to be more attentive, and to get them the hell out of the strip club and get them spending more time at home with their wives. And I loved when it worked. I loved helping them to rekindle a spark that was lost.

I later went on to build my own interior design company. And I loved working with women who had businesses. I loved talking to them about money mindset, confidence, putting yourself out there and marketing yourself.

And that’s when it clicked. I thought, “THIS is what I love. THIS is what I was born to do! I’ve found my purpose!!!”

Every job I ever had, I somehow managed to turn myself into a coach—without even realizing it.

I had no idea what coaching was during those years, but once I realized that I could make money doing what I had been doing my whole life anyway, it was a no brainer.

I want you to ask the same thing: what did you love about every job, every role, every volunteer opportunity you’ve ever had? If it was the coaching aspect—helping people create change—life coaching might be the right path for you.

Question 3: If you could solve just one problem in the world, what would it be?

What do you feel really passionate about? What motivates you? If money were off the table and you had all the money in the world, what would you want to wake up and spend your days doing?

I have a client who feels really strongly about the opioid crisis, and if she could solve one problem, it would be to eliminate that. And you know what she does for a living? She’s an addiction recovery coach.

I have another client who feels really, really strongly about helping people use their voice. It’s that inner worth and that confidence to speak out and set boundaries, and have really healthy relationships. So, she works with people on those exact things.

For me, it’s always been about helping people build their confidence, believe that they are a badass and capable of doing anything. And so I work with women to help them create those feelings within themselves and channel them into building a badass business. And I work specifically with life coaches and therapists and healers, because those are the people that are helping the people.

I feel really strongly about spreading this message into the world. When I help you, and you help others, together, we’re creating change and we’re raising the vibe of the world. And that is what I feel really strongly about.

So, I want you to answer that question: what problem do you want to solve in the world? And if that involves helping people create personal change and transformation in their lives to contribute to a whole, and to contribute toward creating that change in the world, well then, life coaching is probably for you.

I want to invite you to download the Self-belief Workbook that I created for you. Because, putting yourself out there and believing that you have what it takes to create transformation as a life coach takes confidence. You’ve got to start by really doing that inner work to believe in yourself.
