If you’re brand new to business and you’re ready to set some business goals that will propel you forward, but don’t know where to start, this video is for you!
Before we dive in, there are 2 important things I want you to take away from this training:
- Setting goals that have numbers attached to them are super important for tracking your progress, even when you’re brand new (don’t worry, I’m gonna show you how to do this).
- Growth is more important that results, especially in the beginning (I’m gonna show you how to measure growth, too).
Building a business isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon.
Get a pencil and notebook handy because you’re gonna want to take notes and take action while your wheels are spinning!
Sitting down to plan your first year in business can feel scary, intimidating, confusing, overwhelming and frustrating! I mean, it’s one thing to set intentions for what you would like to achieve, but it’s another thing altogether to set goals that are realistic and actionable because, well, you don’t know what you don’t know.
You’ve never done this before and you have the steps to achieve your goals are still unclear. You might want to reach 6-figures, but what are the steps to take to do it? If you aren’t sure, it makes the planning process hard.
The mindset of failing to reach goals
I want to help you create a system to set yourself up for success. One that will keep you from setting goals that are crazy big and then falling short and feeling like you let yourself down. Because the truth is, as long as you’re learning and growing—especially that first year—you’re winning!
Goal Setting 101
The best way to set goals is to use numbers.
If you’ve been in business for a while now, go back and look at your history. What has worked for you in the past? What were your numbers last year? Based on last years numbers, what is a good goal to aim for this year?
(If you really want to grow your business this year, use the RSR Formula to set goals that range from realistic to reaching for the stars!)
If you’re new to business, instead of setting objective numbers based on what you’ve already accomplished, you’re going to set your numbers based on your levels of confidence and growth rather than results.
Start by getting really honest with yourself about where you are emotionally and identify the things right now that are causing you to feel insecure, afraid or uncertain.
Then, measure those feelings on a scale of 1 to 10.
You can start right now by defining some of your goals and then asking yourself, “How confidence do I feel about doing this thing?
Next, set a goal to challenge yourself to improve your confidence levels in this particular area a little bit more each day.
Then track your progress throughout the year by continuing to ask yourself the same question and watch as your confidence levels go up!
Pay attention. Are you getting more courageous? Are you learning? Do you know more than you did at the beginning of the year? Are you overcoming your fears and making progress in your business?
Building your business can feel slow-going at first and while you’re busy trying to achieve a million things (and tackle the learning curve in the process) it can feel like you’re not really making progress, when in fact, you’re making HUGE progress! That’s why it’s important to focus on what is working and measure your growth as you navigate your way through the early phases. This is going to help you keep your confidence up and stay motivated to keep going!
Setting Goals in Year 2
Once you’ve spent a full year measuring your growth and tracking your progress, you’ll have a baseline knowledge of what tasks you need to focus on, how much time and energy they’re going to require of you and what you can realistically get done. This is going to help you set clear goals for next year that align with your lifestyle and make sense for you.
Reminder
Building a business isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon.
As an entrepreneur, there are a lot of things to figure out and it’s not your job to figure it all out today, or this month or even this year. You’ve got the rest of your life to run your business. All of the things you need to know will come in time.
It’s not about getting to the finish line this year. It’s about focus and growth!
What do you want to focus on now? Where do you grow the most this year? How are you committed to pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone to make that possible?
